Results of bringing rapid, amplicon-based sequencing to Doylestown Hospital

Date: Wednesday, July 31
Time: 11:00 - 11:20 AM
Location: Exhibit Hall Theater #2

Advances in NGS have allowed biomarker assessment to take place “in-house”, facilitating shorter turnaround times and more efficient use of laboratory resources. During this workshop, hear how one lab with no previous NGS experience was able to adopt a rapid, amplicon-based NGS genomic profiling assay via an automated semi-conductor sequencing system. You will hear about how utilizing automated amplicon-based sequencing in-house has resulted in reduced TAT and cost savings for Doylestown Hospital.

Learning Objectives:

  • Hear about how bringing amplicon-based sequencing in-house has resulted in improved TAT and cost savings compared to sending out for testing.
  • Gain an understanding of the advantages of automation in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) processes, including shorter turnaround times and more efficient utilization of laboratory resources in local pathology departments.

Feasibility study of an automated, targeted metagenomics NGS application for rapid detection of bacteria and fungi directly from specimens

Date: Wednesday, July 31
Time: 11:30 - 11:50 AM
Location: Exhibit Hall Theater #2

Rapid detection and identification of microbial pathogens in the laboratory is imperative. However, standard microbiology testing approaches often depend on the recovery and culture of viable organisms, limiting their use. More recently, NGS approaches have been successfully used for various applications within the laboratory, but adoption in most laboratories is challenging due to the complexity, expertise, and resources required. To address these shortcomings, we evaluated an automated, targeted metagenomic NGS method to rapidly detect bacteria and fungi directly from specimens. This presentation will describe the performance of this new approach and its advantages over other methods.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of rapid NGS-based approaches to detect and identify microbes in the laboratory.
  • Learn how custom AmpliSeq targeted NGS panels can be used with the Genexus Integrated Sequencer to deliver NGS test results in as little as 24 hours.
  • Understand the performance of the new rapid microbial identification method and how it has the potential to be incorporated into standard microbiology testing.
