What is the Oncomine Clinical Research Grant Program?

The Oncomine Clinical Research Grant is a Thermo Fisher Scientific program to support investigator initiated studies and educational projects. It was established with the aim of raising the quality of molecular profiling and help democratize the future of precision medicine

History of the Oncomine Clinical Research Grant Program

Back in 2020, the program was established as a unique grant program within the industry and “set the foundations for what such a program should look like,” said program leader José Luis Costa, PhD, BCMAS, Global Director of Scientific Affairs at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The grant is open to individuals within healthcare organizations to support research in the field of molecular testing and oncology and accepts proposals from all over the world. It opens two to three calls per year, with each call dedicated to specific topics aimed to address unmet needs in the multiple aspects of clinical cancer research. Funding is considered based on the scientific merits of the proposal.

All information regarding the grant program, including guidelines for applications, reviewer code of conduct, and the application form, can be found at the Oncomine Grant Portal within the oncomine.com website.

To date, we have received more than 350 proposals from 45 countries on 6 continents, and from both academic centers and local community institutions. This shows the reach of the Oncomine Grant Program, and it is a testament from the community to the value and acceptance of such an initiative.

What does a strong project proposal look like?

Optimizing your laboratory’s application for the Oncomine Clinical Research Grant requires a clear proposal that meets the criteria and priorities of program. Here are some general tips that can help you in the grant application process:

1. Develop a comprehensive research proposal: Your research proposal should be clear, concise, and convincing. It should explain the rationale, significance, and objectives of your study. You should also describe your research methods, expected outcomes, and results communication plan.

2. Demonstrate your qualifications: Highlight your previous research experience, publications, and relevant skills. If appropriate include a description of the broader team that will be involved in the project and their roles.

3. Identify your research needs: Create a detailed list that includes all the necessary expenses and supplies. Make sure that your needs align with the grant program’s guidelines and expectations.

4. Submit your application: Ensure that you have followed all the application guidelines and provided all the necessary information before submitting.

What’s Ahead for the Oncomine Clinical Research Grant for 2023 and Beyond?

The Oncomine Clinical Research Grant Program will host two calls for applications in 2023, focusing on cancer genomic profiling.

The first call for applications will open April 14th and the program will receive applications through May 15th, 2023. The second call will be announced later this year.
